Hero of the Week – Larry Powell

By RU Contributor Evil Monkey

There have been many articles about the residents of California. Myself in my evil “red” ways, I don’t really have many positive things to say about them. However, there is always hope when there is Americans involved.

Larry Powell, Fresno School Superintendent has agreed to give up $800,000 in salary over three years. Why? Powell simply wants his projects in his school system to succeed and more importently, his students to succeed.

“Until his term expires in 2015, Powell will run 325 schools and 35 school districts with 195,000 students, all for less than a starting California teacher earns.”
Currently, his estimated salary is $319,000 (my best guess from the given figures). Powell offered his school board to reduce his salary to $31,000 per year in order to divert his salary to projects to help his school districts students.

Lets recap for a second.

Powell went to his school board and gave back $288,241 per year AND his benefits. For his final three years as Superintendent, he decided the money he was earning was better used on other projects for students.
One word. “Winning”

Not only does this selfless act show just how great this guy is, but he did not make a big fuss about it. After he did this act of generosity, it took four days for the news to break, Even with 200 Facebook messages and emails from colleagues, Powell held his modest ground and stated that he didn’t realize what he did was newsworthy.

I submit Larry Powell as RangerUp’s hero of the week. It may not be in regards to the military, but this Civilian held to one of the core Army Values of Selfless Service to better serve his community.
