Douche of the Week: The Troops are Welfare Whores
By Mr. Twisted
Yes, you read that title correctly. There is a group out there with the name of “The Troops are Welfare Whores.” They are on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/antimilitarism
I came across it by chance a few days ago and decided to, instead of just getting pissed off, strike up a conversation with whoever runs the group. His page and emails to me describe the following beliefs:
“…what sense does it make to blame the people who create oppressive laws and murderous policies and then turn around and hold the people who actually execute the oppressive laws and murderous policies completely blameless?
“The military is the enforcement arm of the monstrous United States government. If we are to be consistent, we must blame the government and the troops in the same breath.”
“I don’t hate America. I love America, which is exactly why I am so passionate about this issue. The militaristic United States Government is the greatest enemy of America, and is more of a danger to Americans than any foreign terrorist.”
“I don’t hate the troops. I pity them, just as I pity any cultist.”
Where to begin? The doucheyness is strong in this one, to be sure.
There are those who say “well, I respect his right to speak freely,” and that’s fine. There are also those who would say that at least the dude is honest and not hiding – that is also fine.
What is not fine is that he is, above all other things, a complete moron masquerading as an intellectual. And that is where I feel it to be my duty to call out stupid where I see it and shine a light upon it.
Keep in mind that for any rational belief system, one must have something to base that belief upon. For example, if you are of the mentality that our country has gone off the rails, politically speaking, you can cite the good ol’ Constitution of the United States of America as a reference for how and why things are wrong. Or, bringing it to a personal level, if you think that you are, in fact, tougher than all of your friends, you can all go out on the mat and test that theory – the results of said scuffles being the reference to use later for who was tougher than whom (and, of course, holding over one another’s head….forever).
The “Welfare Whores” guy, however, seems to have concocted this belief system out of thin air. Why are troops a “parasitic” part of the economy? Well, because he said so! How is the militaristic government a danger to Americans? Because he said so! Why are military members “cultists”? You guessed it…
There are so many erroneous claims made on his FAQ page that I’m not sure where to begin and where to end. He claims that he “loves America,” yet his definition of “America” is, apparently, completely made up in his own mind and exists nowhere other than among his own followers. His claim that the military enforces oppressive laws is more than slightly lacking in coherent thought, given the fact that the military doesn’t enforce laws in our country. This would seem to be obvious to anyone with even an elementary level civics education, but apparently the concept is lost on him (Department of Justice and the Department of Defense are, the last I checked, different departments, no?).
What makes a guy like this a total Douche is not his difference of opinion; it is that he lives in a fantasy world created by him and substantiated by a massive ignorance of the real world, which he then chooses to inflict on some of the best individuals our country has to offer.
Here is a quick reality check: The United States Military is quite literally the most beneficial use of our tax dollars when compared to any other government expenditure. Actual welfare, for example, has not “produced” anything – nor will it. But one cannot turn around without bumping into a piece of technology that was at least partially developed by military funding.
Oh, and that whole stopping foreign militaries from killing millions of people was pretty important, last I checked.
In an age where fully one third of our country’s population – yes, that’s correct, one third – is on actual welfare, to state that those who are out there kicking ass, taking names, and contributing positively to the world we live in are “welfare whores” is not only monumentally stupid and insulting, it’s downright Douchetastic.
