Celebrating Stupid

Have you noticed a decided increase in celebrating stupid in our world today?

Everywhere I turn, I see another case of some serious retardation being placed up on a pedestal and given more money.

Think about it: go to any major news site and who do you see the most of? I just did a quick scan of three major news sites and lost track of how many pictures I saw of Miley Cyrus with her new hairdo and Kim Kardashian and her….whatever the hell she’s doing (does anyone really know??). Organizations that say they are bringing you the most important stories have their websites filled with stories on Jean Claude Van-why-do-I-give-a-Dam having an affair and Katy Perry losing her swimsuit at some local pool.

I don’t give a FLYING RAT FUCK about any of this shit.

Seriously, who the hell is reading this crap?

CNN right now has a story on their main page titled “Pregnant man’s divorce drama.”

To quote the famous Ranger School Promo video: “GET FUCKING SERIOUS!”

Our modern landscape is filled with story after story of people who belong to a different reality. They occupy a world where mistakes have the consequences of “fame” and then turn it into a book deal. As long as they say they “have a problem” or that they were “born this way,” it’s apparently completely acceptable to make a mockery of human intelligence and capitalize on idiocy.

Reality show contestants are becoming “stars” rather than being viewed as the insecure, babbling morons they are because we all know that those are the exact types of people the producers of those shows look for. Because it sells.

But this goes beyond Hollywood and whatever passes for “entertainment” these days.

Just look at the nonsense going on in politics.

Every argument that should involve things like, say, policy or economic realities instead gets translated into racism, sexism, or hatred of children. One would think that this kind of trickery would be noticed and squashed, but no.

Instead, there are entire departments on college campuses devoted to those ideas.

What does it take to stop celebrating the stupid? When will the court jesters of the modern world begin being treated like the court jesters of old?

“Yeah, that was a funny joke. Now get the hell out of my chamber; I have a war to run.” That’s how things were not that long ago.

Personally, I don’t care anymore. I don’t care one bit how hot some famous chick looks in a pair of tight pants. I don’t care how low-cut her top is. I don’t care who is gay and who isn’t. And I really, really don’t care who is sleeping with whom.

Writing for the Rhino Den and paying attention to some other MilBlogs out there has taught me something as of late. There is a metric ass-ton of ridiculously talented veterans out there who can do some seriously entertaining shit. They’re commentary is far more intelligent and contains way more thought-provoking material than 99% of what’s coming out of Hollywood. The guys at The Duffel Blog and Action Figure Therapy, along with Nick and the rest of the Ranger Up crew, have every bit the creativity of most “artists” and, let’s be honest, they look almost as good in a pair of Ranger panties.

My point is this: the nut-jobs in Hollywood and most of who pass themselves off as a “politician” have done nothing to earn my respect, and I’m willing to bet you feel the same. So I’m making a point, here and now, to say I’m done pandering to that crap. If I hear people talking about what Lindsay Lohan is doing, I’m going to rudely interrupt them and say “have you seen the Ranger Up workout video??” or “what MilBlogs are you reading these days??” I’m going to throw it in their face. I’m tired of no-talent hacks making millions off of selling their pictures to tabloids so I can see who’s fat and who’s not at the check-out counter.

Unapolgetically American recently released a shirt for sale that said “Contrary to popular opinion, no one owes you anything.” The back simply said “EARN IT.”

These people have done exactly jack shit to earn anything at all. I think it’s high time that people start letting them know that very thing.

I felt this way in the 90′s when Beavis and Butthead, The Simpson’s, and Wayne’s World were all the rage. It was cool to be dumb. I hated it.

Interesting you mention that. I came across a story yesterday about CSM Purdy and how, one day upon walking into a chow hall (at 3/75, as the story goes), he found Beavis & Butthead on the TV. He proceeded to yank the TV off the wall, smash it on the floor, and then chase everyone — officers included — out of the chow hall.

Not sure if it’s entirely factual, but it’s one of those stories that I hope is true.

Spot on! To mimic the other stupidity out there I’m Patrick Nichols and I support this message!”
I can’t stand watching what’s out there now, so I tend to read books. What is curing these days is the dumbing down of multiple generations. It’s more sad than funny as people buy into his crap. I see it daily working in an ER in a Level one trauma center. I used to say stupid people pay my bills, yet they have no insurance, so essentially I am kiting a check. Yet, they come in on backboards or wheelchairs texting n their iPhones or droids about their current predicament. They truly are mental pygmies, alas, back to the basis of your rant.

I agree fully, the funniest peeps on Earth are the “Joes and Janes” in the military. The best part is the “oh so cerebral types” who have never had the honor to serve don’t get it; therefore, the joke is on them. I will always treasure my 15 years being surrounded by the funniest and greatest bastards ( written with nothing but love and respect) on the planet.
Thanks for your blog, is always nice to know there are those out there who share the same ire for the rampant tardism that is part of the culture these days.

Well…”far more intelligent and contains way more thought-provoking material than 99% of what’s coming out of Hollywood”. That’s the problem.

Hollywood is the mainstream for entertainment. They’re the intellectual barometer to measure the country’s interests by.

I used to hate Hollywood for it. Then I came to the conclusion that I was improperly placing blame. Everytime Hollywood comes out with something stupid, the masses cry out “Dumber! Dumber!” so Hollywood does what any Free Enterprise should do and gives the people what they’re begging for. They find something dumber.

I’m not saying they don’t have their place. They do. Personally, I like to tune in once a week to “Smoking Gun presents: World’s Dumbest _____”. I laugh my ass off at the idiots on “Bait Car”. I don’t see anything at all wrong with that.

Perhaps it’s because the more important parts of our reality are too difficult to think about. I don’t mean too difficult in the intellectual sense, but in the emotional. It’s hard to get a grasp on things like yesterday. Syria bombed the unholy dog-snot out of it’s own elderly, women, and children. They just said “Fuck It” and destroyed their own people. No rebels, no strategic or military targets. No, just people trying to go about the business of surviving in the mess their country has become.

It can be difficult to get your intellectual arms around what kind of lunacy would inspire someone to shoot the shit out of a theater of people. No goal, no reason, just bug-fuck crazy.

Some might find it difficult to listen to the near continuous lies of political operatives and figure out what the hell is going on in our country. You’ve got the former Speaker of the House on YouTube spouting off that she saw the ghosts of famous Womens’ Rights advocates. That’s the same person who was but a few heartbeats away from the Presidency.

So I think some people just check out.

Animals, when they succumb to stress, sleep. I think it would be hard to argue that there’s a lot of people sleep-walking through existence. Maybe we’re not as far removed from the animals as we might like to think.

      Couldn’t agree more.

I agree with the difficulty of paying attention. I used to watch the news in the evening, but stopped as I would feel horribly depressed after each news show. The stories were always suicide, murders, innocents being killed by their own governments, our own government passing stupid laws that we were not able to vote on. It created a sense of helplessness, like I was powerless to do anything.
Another aspect of the lack of intellectual entertainment/information gathering is that I simply don’t know where to start. There are so many blogs and news sources out there that it gets overwhelming. How do I know who is trustworthy and who is convincingly spouting false information/opinions? I’ve been working on this, trying to pay attention to news sources from some of my more rational friends and when I have the time investigating the legitimacy of the articles they post.

@Marcella, as far as figuring out who’s lying goes, I assume all of them are. I go by the adage that there’s three versions of every story. Side A’s version, Side B’s version and the truth. I try to split my time between Pro-Dem and Pro-Rep news sources, Pro-Liberal and Pro-Conservative.

I look for demonstrable facts. Too many news sources seem to mix commentary, facts, and entertainment into one big lump of shit and then pass it off as the news. Too many preach, and too few practice, the simple act of “Here’s the facts. Decide for yourself.”

    Semper Fi and Carry on.
