An Open Letter to the NY State Assembly

Updated: January 15, 2013

Editor’s Note: I received this from a friend and thought I would share given the latest acts of the New York State Assembly and Governor (who just may be positioning himself for a 2016 Presidential bid).  The writer is not affiliated with Ranger Up or The Rhino Den. -RU Rob

Ladies and Gents,

First of all, I have been a defender of this country, the constitution, and freedom for almost 19 years and 5 tours of duty. I am also a responder to the 9-11 attacks and a Soldier who stood a post on various state active duty missions after that terrible day, defending our citizens. I believe in all those things I defend and I believe in what the founding fathers stood for. I believe the second amendment is not open to interpretation, especially for political gain, and I believe it is put into place as the second amendment to protect all the other amendments. It is not about target shooting, it is not about hunting, it is about the right of the people to prevent tyranny. Period. I hold that opinion as a combat infantryman – who has stood on the firing end of a gun, both here and abroad. Few may contend from that point of view – I am the “less than one percent”.

I and many of my fellow citizens believe we elect the legislators, and elected officials to act on our behalf in an educated, reasonable, and impartial way – not exploiting fear and giving in to partisanship to further an agenda and get themselves re-elected. We hire our government with a contract to us to not only enact laws that are meaningful and worthwhile but also laws and regulations that do not infringe upon a free man’s basic human liberty of defending himself, his property and his loved ones.

This bill that is likely to be voted on today is not what an educated and reasonable, clear thinking person would bother wasting time on. But certain politicians are leading the average citizen astray – giving up a little more personal liberty for security – exactly what some of the founding fathers warned us about. When in the end you will not actually be making them any safer – let’s be honest and conduct ourselves like honorable people. It is all window dressing in the name of safety to actually push a liberal agenda and exercise more control. When does it stop? Lets enact some legislation that actually works. Let’s get tough on crime, let’s keep people in jail and institutions instead of walking the streets making people feel the need to defend themselves outside the home AND inside the home. Let’s stop arming the drug cartels with our own legally produced and illegally purchased(because we let them to “track” them – Fast and Furious) and then hide behind executive privilege. Let’s let the cops catch the robbers and give them the tools and not keep putting criminals, rapists, and murderers back on the street. Let’s enforce the laws we already have not making a show of making something already illegal “really illegal”. Let’s face it – it’s not guns, “gun culture”, high capacity magazines or any such thing – it is the breakdown of morality, the family unit, and the way the government, state institutions, schools and colleges have made this a zero consequence society. While we are at it lets get Hollywood to help out – no more violent movies or video games – that is the real gun culture – hit them in the wallet and see if they will keep their tune.

I read an article today where there was talk the Governor was talking of waiving the three-day waiting period for new legislation that the State Constitution requires because it is an emergency – emergency? Tragic incident does not make it an emergency. Again – sensationalism for political gain. Emergency you say? Would it be something to call 911 for? Not an emergency. Rhetoric to push an agenda through. I surely hope you do not believe we believe this. Erosion of the second amendment should not be taken lightly with emotional responses and rushed through for no real good reason.

Gun laws keep guns from law abiding citizens and criminals will still get them – fact. We in the armed service do not use the “mass punishment” model much past basic training – why? It does nothing but teach someone to bond together against something else. Mass punishment of gun owners because a mentally insane person did an unspeakable thing does not pass the litmus test of common sense.

Let’s go back to 1934 and 1968 National Firearms Act – this is when your “Assault Weapons” were restricted and/or made illegal. Can we stop using the media’s term they use to sell papers. You are supposed to be elected officials who represent us not help the media sell papers.

The numbers do not lie – Washington, DC, Chicago, NYC, and Detroit have some of the strictest gun laws ever and how safe are we in those cities….not very. The 1994 “Assault Weapons Ban” was allowed to sunset in 2004 because it did nothing what so ever to curb crime – window dressing. The Combined Ballistic Identification System ran for almost 11 years? Wasted how much money? What crimes were solved? I have seen the numbers – real budget numbers not the left’s or right’s.

The supreme court consistently rules with the view that the second amendment is about the right of the people to own weapons.

Sir/Ma’am – I urge you. Let’s stop with the pointless laws and constant talk that we can regulate or legislate morality or lawfulness. We cannot. Let’s focus on the security of our society with common sense and punish those already violating our laws and keep them from the citizens. I urge you to truly represent the citizens and vote against a meaningless law that will only further erode one of the greatest guarantees ever given to a people by a constitution – the basic liberty from tyranny. Vote the constitution.

Was this really sent to the Assembly?
It’s great until you get to the end & it’s signed “the Prophet”
    — hard to take it seriously, unfortunately.

Amen. This should not be taking lightly. Its a right not a privlage. Not to hunt, not to shoot skeet but to protect our homes and to protect ourselves from the government. When tyranny sets in.

this argument has some merit to it. but when people say things like:

“Today Muslims, Socialists, the U.N., and other terrorists are celebrating another victory in New York…Well Done Governor Andrew “Jihad” Cuomo and Mayor Michael “Goebbels” Bloomberg!”

this kind of statements brings down the pro gun argument and further stereotypes those who are pro gun as ignorant.

I agree wholeheartedly as a former Infantry Soldier. The 2nd amendment is about the right to defend and protect one’s self, family and property. But the most important aspect of it is to be able to defend your liberty from any Government or persons who seek to take it from you. Gun control or “Bans” are a direct violation of the Constitution as they seek to curb my liberty and put my life in danger and prevent me from being happy safe and secure. “If you want total security than go to prison” Dwight D. Eisenhower. Life is a risk and not guaranteed but those who have money and power and are surrounded by Gunmen who protect them for LIFE and your telling me I will be safer with out one? Horsefeathers. Don’t be a fool, a gun in the hands of a good person is no threat to any one no matter what kind it is. A weapon in the hands of a bad person is a threat to every one. The weapon it’s self is not the problem,it is the person who uses it for Evil. Capital Punishment should come back in every state, you commit murder you hang and do it publicly at the county level. 120 years ago when everybody carried a weapon every one was POLITE and people saw the consequences of murder first hand at the hanging. 60days from arrest to Hanging is enough time for the trial at $100,000.00 a year plus to keep them in prison killing them (Murderers)is cheaper by far.
